Why the Google algorithm changes are a good thing for the internet

By

A large internet ruckus greeted the recent changes to the algorithm of Google search engine. The Google algorithm is the calculation that the Google search engine uses to gauge how high up websites should appear in the Google search engine results and so effectively decides the visibility of websites when people search for them. The Google algorithm changes were initially introduced for Google.com, but later they were rolled out to other localized Googles, for instance, Google.ie and Google.ca. About twenty percent of Google search engine results were effected by the Google algorithm changes with some websites experiencing increased visibility and others dropping down in the rankings. Website owners and writers with sites who gained from the Google algorithm changes were relatively silent after the Google algorithm changes, but owners of websites that did badly have been much louder since the changes.

So why did Google change their search engine algorithm?

The Google algorithm changes were brought in, Google say, to prevent poor quality and low value content ranking highly in the Google search engine results.

What do you mean by ‘poor quality’ and ‘low value content’?

An example of poor quality that causes problems would be when a bad writer creates a substandard piece of work, either from scratch or by copying an existing article into his or her own words, and then promotes the inferior article using SEO of Google (SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization and is a group of techniques that can be used to improve search engine rankings). The resulting weaker content can sometimes end up appearing higher up the Google search engine results than the original (better written) article.

Examples of a low value content content article would be work that is substantially duplicated, insubstantial, lacking veracity, or poorly written. Alternatively, it may consist almost entirely of advertising. Google were concerned about sites using excessive advertising, which can create a poor experience for the website visitor. They were also concerned about the technical trickery used by some websites to boost their Google search engine rankings.

Surely what Google has done can only be a good thing?

Yes, despite all the complaints from people who lost out, in the long run everyone will benefit, because the Google algorithm changes will make everyone raise their game.  If Google hadn’t taken action, the Google search engine would have just continued to give high rankings to more and more of what can only be described as, for want of a better word, crap!

I, for one, am pleased about the changes. I didn't like sites with poor content getting better Google search results than articles I had really poured my guts into, to provide Internet users with good and helpful content. My articles are now doing better in search results.

I thought it would be interesting (and fun) to write two articles, one pro and one against. Ironically, I used the same opening paragraph for both articles and this hub was briefly taken down by HubPages on the grounds that it contained duplicated material! ;-)

(I did some re-editing and they put it back online)

I am glad your aritcles are doing well, you have got some excellent work online and I like your no BS approach.

Glad you got this one sorted, accepted and published. A no BS approach? I didn't really see it like that, my "say-it-as-it-is" approach, but now that you've called it something, yes, perhaps you're right - a no BS approach - and I like the sound of that - thanks :)

i believe that once all of the kinks are worked out it will be a good thing. i definitely see what they are trying to achieve and hope for success. however, there is still a long way to go before we see the positive effects of the changes.

No doubt that changes in algorithm is good but we couldn't ignore another side of the coin. Like you said that previously sites with lower quality content even used to show in top results due to SEO techniques will now be less preferred that the one with fresh and updated content. But ultimately it is also hampering SEO and Internet Marketing field as, what about the sites which updates it content monthly but it is on the top for a day or two? This new change is almost similar to the strategies brought by internet and sites of using captcha codes to recognize scammers and it also use to ban true human. The similar change if Google would gave made with just News and Blogs section then that would have much better for all around. However I am just hoping for the best!
