Review: Sherwood RX4105 100 Watts Stereo Receiver

By

I bought a Sherwood RX 4105 amp/receiver from Amazon a month ago (as a gift to myself!) and I thought that I would write a review of it. Overall, I would say I am very happy with this amp/receiver. For the price that Amazon are selling them for, I think it was an excellent deal and within their price range, you won’t do any better in terms of 100 watts stereo receivers. Some people seemed a bit sniffy about Sherwood when I read through the reviews, which I really do not understand, as I have always generally found them to be a reliable brand when it comes to affordable stereo receivers and this one was no exception.

Audio Quality

I use mine primarily as an amplifier for CDs rather than the radio. I also have my TV and laptop running through it for enhanced sound during some shows. The music quality really is excellent for a stereo receiver of this price range. The audio output quality is strong, with the phono section built in preamp and the total discrete amplier stage combining to give great clarity at both the bass and treble end of the range. The volume of the 100 watts output is more than enough for any home user, but it’s always nice to have a lot of spare in my experience. I just have one pair of speakers going through it, but there is scope for an extra pair, should you require it and you can switch between them if you wish.

The Sherwood RX4105 Remote, Inputs and Radio

The remote is small and easy to use. I have never had any trouble with it. One of the appeals of the Sherwood stereo receiver/amplifier for me was that it had plenty of RCA inputs. I like the option of having many devices going through my amplifier, things such as my TV and laptop, as well as the CD player and it annoys me if I have to keep unplugging and plugging in devices. With lots of inputs, I can just set up and leave it. I must admit that I am not a big radio listener, so I haven’t used the radio that much. It has always sounded great when I have done, however and once I had it set up right, there haven’t been any problems.

As far as speakers go, I put the Sherwood through a pair of Sony SS-B1000bookshelf speakers and a Sony SA-W2500 Subwoofer - both of which I would recommend if you are an audiophile on a limited budget like myself.

Size and Weight of the Stereo Receiver

One of the reviewers that I read moaned about the Sherwood RX4105 Stereo Receiver being bulky and heavy. It is true that it is above average in size and you wouldn’t particularly want to be carrying it around all day, but soon as it’s not meant to be a portable sound system I really don’t understand what the issue is? I mean you set the stereo receiver up in your living-room and then leave it there. That’s what I did. So whilst it’s true that it is a bigger and heavier machine than average, I wouldn’t let that put you off.

Summary

As I said at the start, you can get better 100 watts stereo receivers, but nothing for this sort of price, in my experience. If you want an affordable stereo receiver that delivers quality audio, I would check out the Sherwood RX4105. (I bought my machine from Amazon, I normally find them to be a reliable online retailer and my purchase of the stereo receiver was no exception. The Sherwood RX 4105 was very competitively priced and it arrived swiftly and was in perfect condition when it arrived after shipping. I would also add that I have had no problems with it since.)
