Best 3D Blu-ray player: OPPO BDP-93 (review)

Having written in brief about what I believe to be the top 5 best 3D Blu-ray players, I thought that it was worth writing in more detail about the best on the market at the moment: the OPPO BDP-93. The reason that I believe this player to be the best 3D Blu-ray player and why I wanted to write a more detailed review is because I simply think that it provides an unbeatable combination of high quality and value for money.

Yes, this machine does all the basics and does them exceptionally well – it plays 3D Blu-ray discs, has network streaming, it has 2nd Generation Qdeo Video Processing, Wireless N, USB 2.0, eSATA, and can accommodate SACD & DVD-Audio/Video – but there is so much more to the OPPO BDP-93.

One element of 3D blu-ray players that reviewers often miss out is the sound quality. It is a major error in my opinion as the audio is as much a part of the home theater experience as the picture quality. The audio playing qualities of the Oppo BDP-93 are equal or superior to the average CD player, something that you could consider dispensing with if and when you get this machine, as the Oppo delivers clear audio in perfect stereo. It can also play a wide variety of audio formats.

To say that the Oppo captures colors exceptionally well is an understatement. This player will blow you away with its ability to deliver awkward color combinations without any banding and deliver vibrant reds with apparent ease. The video quality is crystal clear and it can play just about any disc media that you give it.

Another great thing about the Oppo BDP-93 is its quick response time (which cannot be said for all the Blu-ray players that I have encountered!). You switch it on and immediately it springs into action and opens the drawer. Slip your Blu-ray disc into the drawer and it loads without delay. It is quiet too. In fact it’s virtually impossible to hear anything unless you have got your ear pressed up against it.

The internet streaming is very easy to set up. To use it you will need to already have wi-fi in your home already. As far as the streaming goes, you can watch Netflix movies in relatively good quality, although as with all streaming, the detail of the picture and audio is limited by the amount of information that the internet can transfer and it is never going to rival the quality that you get with a Blu-ray disc. The streaming option is there to use, however, and although you lose something in terms of quality, you do get a massive range of choice of movies and shows to select from.

Oppo have made a name for themselves in recent years by making products that cater for the high quality end of the home theater experience and are now rightly seen as a leader in this field. In my opinion, the Oppo BDP-93 provides a good reason to pay more for your 3D Blu-ray player, because the extra quality that you receive makes the additional financial outlay more than worth it, certainly when it comes to the more discerning home theater enthusiast. Basically, you are getting a high end product at a price that won’t break the bank.
